DIY Father’s Day Necktie Card

If I’ve learned anything over the years, it’s that dads are special. If I’ve learned a second thing, it’s that we don’t spend enough time showing our dads how much they mean to us. So, this Father’s Day, give your dad a gift that comes straight from the heart: a handmade necktie card. With these easy-to-follow instructions, you can create a unique and personalized card that any dad or father-figure is sure to cherish. This activity is simple, fun, and totally kid friendly! And, if you want to make it even more special, pair the necktie card with his favorite Dutch Apron® Bakery Cake Roll flavor. It’s the Father’s Day combo that can’t be beat!

What You’ll Need

  • Square Origami Paper
  • Note Paper (optional)
  • Double-sided tape (optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions for Making a Father’s Day Necktie Card

Step 1

Step 1 of Father's Day Necktie Card - a piece of square paper with a blue flannel pattern.

Start by choosing a fun patterned paper for the necktie (floral, striped, or even solid colors). Gently fold the square paper in half along both diagonals. We’re not aiming for perfection – just enough to give us some crease lines to work with.

Step 2

Step 2 of Father's Day Necktie Card - Fold the left and right corners into the center, forming the basic tie shape. Then, fold the top corner down to give the tie its signature triangular point.

Step 3

Fold the left and right outer corners into the center.

Step 4

Fold the top corner down to give the tie its signature triangular point.

Step 5

Flip the paper over and fold the top edge down so the point sits about 1/2 inch below the fold. This creates the flap of the tie.

Step 6

Fold the flap up at the point to complete the tie. Finally, turn the paper over and fold the edges into the center from the outer bottom points to form the full tie shape. Pop out the corners at the top to create a knot shape.

Write a personal note for Dad (or have your kiddos write their own!) and tuck it under the flaps. Secure the note in place with a bit of double-sided tape to keep it a surprise.

Bonus Tip: Give Dad the Dessert He Deserves!

Now that your DIY necktie cards are complete, why not add a little something extra for Dad? Give your cards alongside a Dutch Apron® Cake Roll – Lemon Crème, Strawberry Cheesecake, or whichever flavor dad loves most – and you’ll have made a Father’s Day moment he’ll always remember. It’s a gift combination that says, “I love you” and “I brought cake” …which is basically the same thing.

Happy crafting, and happy Father’s Day!
