5 New Uses for Old Jars

Have you found yourself the less-than-proud owner of too many old jars that you don’t know what to do with? I am 100% guilty of keeping jars simply because I feel bad throwing them out. So, this spring, I decided to be proactive and come up with different ways to upcycle those old jars that are guaranteed to save me and my family both space and money.

From the kitchen to DIY crafts, here are 5 creative uses for those old jars collecting dust in your pantry or storage area!

5 New Uses for Old Jars

1. To-Go Snack Containers

Tired of finding crushed crackers or squished grapes in your bag or in the back seat of your car? Same. Jars are perfect for a variety of different snacks, especially the ones you worry about getting flattened during transit. I love layering hummus or guac at the bottom and tucking veggie sticks on top for a quick, healthy grab-and-go option. It’s super convenient and so delicious (not to mention easy on the wallet)! Great for road trips, errands, or a little mid-day treat at your desk.

2. Ingredient Storage

I’ve always loved the look of a well-organized pantry, and jars make it so much easier to pull off. Instead of buying matching containers, I just clean up old jars and fill them with baking staples, spices, or even tea bags. Add a cute label or a bit of twine and voilà: instant pantry glow-up. Plus, glass keeps things fresh and lets you see when it’s time to restock. It’s functional and fun to look at—my favorite combo.

3. Mise en Place

Cooking for a crowd or just trying to make weeknight dinners feel less chaotic? Try prepping your ingredients ahead of time and storing them in jars. Then, when it’s time to cook, everything is ready and waiting. I especially love this trick for baking with my kids; it helps keep little hands from grabbing everything all at once (and lets me enjoy the process more, too).

4. Flower and Herb Vase

Jars make the sweetest little vases for fresh blooms or cuttings from the garden. I’ve used them for last-minute centerpieces, place settings, or just to brighten up a windowsill. And if you’re propagating plants? They’re perfect for that too. So simple, so beautiful—and a great excuse to bring a little life indoors.

5. Terrarium Greenhouse

This one is a little craftier, but, trust me, it’s worth it. Grab an old jar, layer in some pebbles, moss, and tiny plants, and you’ve got yourself a low-maintenance, high-impact mini garden. It’s a fun project for a quiet afternoon and makes a great gift, too (especially when paired with a handwritten note or a home-baked treat). Even better? These little green worlds thrive in kitchens, bathrooms, or anywhere that needs a touch of nature.

Repurpose, Reuse, and Refresh

The best part about repurposing jars is that it’s equal parts practical and personal. Whether you’re organizing the pantry, prepping for a party, or just making your everyday a little more beautiful, old jars are such a simple way to add creativity and care to your space without adding anything extra to your budget.
