What’s better than an array of delicious snacks on game day? Delicious snacks that are on-theme! Football Cake Balls are a fun, festive, and surprisingly simple DIY treat that all your guests will love, regardless of what team they’re rooting for. These bite-sized desserts look like mini footballs, complete with chocolate coating and laces made of frosting. Plus, they’re super customizable, so you can set them out and let your guests be the ones to add the finishing touches.

Not only is this a fun activity, but it is a delicious way to set the tone for a festive game day party. So, let’s get started!

Items Needed

  • Football-shaped silicone mold: to shape your cake balls. You can order these online: 2 Pack Football Mold.
  • A hand mixer and large mixing bowl: to combine the cake and filling for the base of your cake balls. Alternatively, you can mix the cake and filling together by hand.
  • Microwave-safe bowl: to melt your chocolate.
  • Piping bags: to decorate your Football Cake Balls.

Ingredients

  • 1 Dutch Apron® Bakery Chocolate Crème Cake Roll
  • 1 pkg. chocolate melts
  • Vegetable oil
  • White icing or candy melts
  • Optional: food coloring

Instructions

  1. Let the Chocolate Crème Cake Roll thaw at room temperature for 30 minutes. Once softened, break into pieces and put them in a large mixing bowl. Then, using a mixer on medium speed, beat until thoroughly combined.
  2. In a microwave-safe bowl, melt one package of chocolate melts in 30-second intervals, stirring after each interval. Continue until fully melted.
  3. Add a small amount of vegetable oil to the chocolate to thin it out. This makes for easier pouring. Stir until smooth.
  4. Spoon a thin layer of chocolate into the football-shaped molds, ensuring all edges are coated evenly. Then, place the mold in the freezer for 5 minutes to set.
  5. Add another thin layer of chocolate to your molds to ensure a thick and sturdy shell. Freeze for another 5 minutes.
  6. Take the cake mixture and press it firmly into the molds. Ensure the cake is level and leaves enough space at the top of the mold for the final chocolate layer.
  7. Spoon the melted chocolate over the cake-filled molds, smoothing it out to create a flat, even layer. If your chocolate has set, reheat in the microwave until melted.
  8. Freeze for another 5 minutes or until fully set.
  9. Carefully remove the football-shaped cake balls from the mold.
  10. If you want to decorate the Football Cake Balls yourself, use white icing or white candy melts to pipe football laces on top of each cake ball. Let them sit for a few minutes to allow the icing to harden.
  11. If you are going to leave the decorating to the guests, set out your finished cake balls and piping bags filled with icing.
    • Tip: You can also add food coloring to some of that white icing, so your guests can decorate using the colors of the two NFL teams that are facing off on Sunday. Just add a few drops of food coloring to your white icing and stir. Then, once you’ve achieved your desired shade, pour in bowls or put in piping bags for your guests to use.

2. Play Game Day Commercial Bingo

Let’s face it, for a lot of people, game day commercials are more exciting than the game itself. So, why not make it even more entertaining with a little friendly competition? Game Day Commercial Bingo is the perfect activity to keep everyone engaged, even those who aren’t die-hard football fans. It’s simple, interactive, and guarantees a few laughs throughout the night.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Before the game starts, print out our downloadable Game Day Commercial Bingo template.
    • This template features eight different bingo cards. Each one includes common commercial themes or elements like “movie trailer”, “famous athlete”, and “fast food”.
  2. As the commercials roll, players will mark off the squares that match what they see. The first person to get a bingo wins a prize…or at least bragging rights for the rest of the evening. You can even go a step further to see who is the first to get a blackout bingo.

3. Host a Football Toss Challenge

Get everyone up and moving with a Football Toss Challenge! It’s a fun way to bring some action to your game day gathering, and it’ll definitely get the crowd hyped before kickoff or during halftime.

To set up, all you need is a football and a target. You can use a hula hoop, a laundry basket, or grab a foldable football toss game from your local sporting goods store.

To play, simply have each player take turns trying to score points by throwing the football through the target. You can assign different point values based on the difficulty of the shot – like 10 points for a short toss and 25 points for a long-distance throw. To keep it exciting, you can also try creating different rounds or challenges, such as a timed round where players make as many throws as they can in 30 seconds.

At the end of the game, tally up the points to crown your Football Toss Champion!

4. Make Your Predictions for the Big Game

Kick off the excitement before the first whistle with a game day predictions contest! It’s an easy way to keep everyone engaged and interested throughout the game, regardless of their level of football knowledge.

Here’s how to play:

  1. Download and print out the template we’ve created. Pass out the sheets to your guests before the game starts.
  2. Instruct everyone to fill it out with their predictions for the game.
  3. Gather the sheets up before kickoff, so no one can sneak in any last-minutes changes.
  4. Keep track of the action as it unfolds, awarding points for each correct prediction.
  5. At the end of the game, tally up the points and announce the winner. Consider having a small prize to give out like a football-themed souvenir or extra treats.

5. Test Your Football Knowledge with Halftime Trivia

While the halftime show takes center stage, keep your guests entertained by putting their football knowledge to the test with a round of trivia! This activity is a great way to keep the energy up while waiting for the second half, or the halftime show, to start.

Below are some tips on how to host your own halftime trivia session:

  1. Before the big game, put together a list of football-themed trivia questions. Include a mix of easy, medium, and hard questions to keep everyone interested.
  2. Gather everyone around during halftime and explain the rules. You can have people play as individuals or split them into teams for a more competitive vibe. Players can either write their answers down or shout them out.
  3. For each right answer, the person (or team) gets a point.
  4. At the end of the game, tally up the points and announce the winner (or winning team). Having small prizes available can make the game even more fun for those participating.

With these fun and interactive activities, your game day party is guaranteed to be a touchdown. Whether your guests are die-hard football fans or just there for the company, these activities ensure there is something for everyone. Though, in our experience, there is no doubt that the Football Cake Balls will be the MFP on your Big Game Sunday. Now, grab your jersey, set out the snacks, and get ready for an unforgettable game day celebration!
